After a few days of speculation about Kevin Keegan’s employment, the former England manager has chosen to resign as Newcastle manager. All this dispute was over Keegan’s “lack of control” over transfering players and this predicament has occured since the appointment of Dennis Wise who will now surely become caretaker manager.

Keegan was only in the job for eight months after saving them last year from relegation. Fans were looking forward to this season as they expected ‘King Kev’ to have a top half finish at least. HIs resignation however brings about another question compeltely: is football becoming too business minded and about the money?

In recent years we’ve seen players move clubs to earn more money (e.g. Ashley Cole). Even in this years transfer market, Robinho moved to Manchester City undoubtebly for the money they will pay him in a week. It’s even effected managers such as Mourinho who was amazingly successfull at Chelsea but left because of lack of control as Abramovich was telling him who to buy. Curbishley left West Ham for similar reasons as Keegan because he wasn’t happy with the selling of Ferdinand and McCartney.

This is all down to chairmans. It’s hard to say that they shouldn’t be involved as much because afterall, they own the club. Saying this, we can also say that they shouldn’t be involved as much with what the managers do and should let them their jobs. Otherwise football will become too much about money (which is sort of the case already) rather than pride and enjoying the game.

Quick mention about possible replacements. Obviously Shearer will be a candidate like he is everytime. So to will Dennis Wise infact as he has a good track record of the clubs he has managed.

Another possibility is Bilic. He’s been mentioned in the West Ham shortlist but could feature on this one too. He would be awesome to have in the Premiership.

A disappointing start and middle last season but they ended it on a high. I do not believe that their bad run was completely down to Sam Allardyce but Kevin Keegan has certainly rescued the club from a big predicament. Michael Owen’s goalscoring form and a little bit of luck where the main factors that helped them survive last year. They will look forward to the forthcoming season.

Strengths:

  • Strikers: Newcastle have a great strike-force with Mark Viduka, Obafemi Martins and Michael Owen which is a mixture of pace and strength.
  • Goalkeeper: Shay Given has been an excellent keeper for the club and we do rate him highly.

Weakness:

  • Defence: Even after the purchase of Coloccini, they may still be shaky at the back which was their main source of downfall last season.

Our Predictions:

J-Lee: I always struggle to see why Newcastle don’t do as well as they can or would like. They’ve got a good midfield with tremendous strikers willing to pounce on any opportunity they get. After signing Coloccini, they’ll be a lot more solid at the back, although they could do with another defender. I reckon they’ll do better than last year and probably be at the top of the teams who have no real chance of qualifying for the UEFA Cup which will be their long-term target.

The Doc: The Magpies have been patiently waiting for some trophies since the beginning of time, and unfortunately I see this season being another trophyless season. However with the Legend Keegan in charge they will begian to put the foundations in place. I expect a similar season to the last, but they will probably end strongly. My prediction: 9th

Transfers:

  • Defenders: A few more of these things won’t go a miss as their biggest weakness/speciality is comical defending. I mean, my eight-year-old cousin can do better than that!
